BLACK MIDI JOHN L

Managing not only to live up to the incredibly high expectations placed on them, but to excel them with ease, everyone's favourite virtuosic oddballs black midi are back. Delighting fans with news of their sophomore album Calvalcade (out on the 28th of May via indie legends Rough Trade), 'John L' is it's bludgeoning mission statement. Intending to incite chaos, 'John L' is a frantic entanglement of fiddly guitars, rampant bass and thundering drums that replicate the harshness of gunfire at points. Cloaked in occasionally surreal delays, Geordie Greep's lyrics speak of revolution, imagining a scenario in which cult leaders' followers turn against them. Arriving alongside a frankly incredible video directed, choreographed, edited and animated by Nina McNeely, 'John L' is an explosive audio-visual introduction to Calvalcade that needs to be seen to be believed. -Holly Mullineaux
